As a parent of a seven year old child it seems as though both of us share the same academic stress during the exam period. The frustration she undergoes when studying reminds me of myself at that age. The headache, crying, anger and tantrum tells me nothing has change from generation to generation. I have found two articles that can provide you with a better insight about examination.
Judith Burns, an education reporter wrote an article on exams stress which was published on bbc.com. The article was based on the Association of Teachers and Lecturers member’s survey. In it she stated that primary school children between the ages of 10-11 are under enormous pressure when being tested in exams. The excessive pressure placed on some students have a negative effect, causing mental health issues which can lead to suicide or self-harm.
Matt Christison, a high school principal and Stephanie Schneider, a school teacher debated on the topic “Are exams bad for children?” The debate was published on New Internationalist Magazine. Matt believed that standardised testing is unlikely to disappear, and politics and inappropriate uses of standardised testing do interfere with the daily work of teachers and learning in schools. Stephanie said that more classroom time is being dedicated to exam preparation and administration resulting in the narrowing of the curriculum.
These two articles identifies some of the issues involved in testing your child’s ability. As a parent how can you support your son or daughter during exams? Below are three recommendations to improve your child’s focus and health during the exam period.
- Unnecessary Pressure– don’t set high expectation, be reasonable.
- Remain Calm– it’s not about you, so don’t be anxious and worried, your behaviour may negatively affect your child.
- Help Them Revise– don’t try to cram months or years of school work in a short period.
